Jaw pain that comes and goes, a clicking or popping sound when you chew, headaches that seem to start near the jaw and spread upward — these are not random complaints. They often point to a problem with the temporomandibular joint, the hinge that connects your jawbone to your skull and drives every movement involved in eating and speaking.

At Red Rock Dental, our team diagnoses and treats TMJ disorders for patients across Las Vegas. Early identification of these conditions makes them significantly more manageable, so if you are noticing any of the signs described below, scheduling an evaluation sooner rather than later is worthwhile.

Symptoms of TMJ Disorders

TMJ disorders, also called TMD, can produce a range of symptoms that vary in severity and location. Common signs include:

  • Pain in the jaw, ears, or face
  • Chronic headaches or migraines
  • Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when opening or closing the jaw
  • Stiff or fatigued facial muscles, particularly upon waking
  • Difficulty opening the mouth fully or smoothly
  • A sensation of the jaw locking in an open or closed position
  • Teeth grinding or clenching while awake or asleep
  • Teeth that appear chipped, worn at the edges, or unexpectedly shifted
  • Muffled or clogged hearing without an apparent ear condition

Because many of these symptoms overlap with other conditions, proper diagnosis by a dental provider is important before pursuing treatment. Our team uses a thorough clinical assessment to confirm whether a TMJ disorder is present and what is contributing to it.

TMJ Treatments to Relieve Your Pain

Treatment works best when there is coordination between the patient and the dental provider. The primary goal is to relieve joint pain and muscle spasm, and the right approach depends on the severity and underlying contributing factors.

Conservative options are typically tried first. Pain medications and muscle relaxants can reduce acute discomfort. Steroid injections directly into the joint may be recommended for significant inflammation. Self-care measures are also effective for many patients and include resting the jaw, maintaining space between the teeth when not eating, eating softer foods, applying ice or heat packs, and practicing jaw exercises. For patients whose symptoms are driven by habits such as clenching or poor posture, behavioral adjustments may also be part of the plan.

Nightguards and Oral Appliances for TMJ

For patients whose TMJ symptoms are connected to teeth grinding or clenching, an oral appliance such as a splint or nightguard is often a central part of treatment. Worn over the upper and lower teeth, a nightguard maintains space between the teeth, reduces muscle tension, and decreases pressure on the joint and cartilage surfaces throughout the night.

Anterior positioning devices are another type of appliance used when disk repositioning is the goal. These move the jaw slightly forward to relieve pressure on specific parts of the joint and may be worn for extended periods as part of a longer treatment protocol. Our team determines which type of appliance is appropriate based on each patient’s individual diagnosis and symptom pattern.

TMJ disorders respond well to treatment when identified early and managed consistently. Left unaddressed, they tend to worsen over time and can lead to more significant joint changes, bite shifts, and persistent pain. Our Las Vegas team is here to identify what is driving your symptoms and help you build a clear, manageable plan for addressing them.

What causes TMJ disorders?

TMJ disorders can result from several contributing factors, including jaw injury, arthritis affecting the joint, teeth grinding or clenching, bite misalignment, or prolonged stress that leads to chronic jaw tension. In many cases, multiple factors are involved, which is why a thorough clinical evaluation is the starting point for any treatment plan.

Can TMJ disorders go away on their own?

Mild TMJ symptoms sometimes improve with rest and self-care, but persistent or worsening symptoms rarely resolve without some form of intervention. Leaving TMJ disorders untreated can lead to progressive joint wear, worsening pain, and bite changes that become more involved to address over time. Early evaluation gives you more options and better outcomes.

Is a nightguard covered by dental insurance?

Coverage for nightguards varies by plan. Some dental insurance policies cover a portion of the cost when the appliance is prescribed for a diagnosed condition such as bruxism or TMD. Medical insurance may also provide partial coverage in some situations. Our team can help you review your benefits and understand your out-of-pocket costs before treatment begins.

How long does TMJ treatment take?

The timeline depends on the severity of the condition and the treatment approach. Some patients experience significant relief within a few weeks of starting conservative treatment. Others with more advanced joint involvement may need a longer course of management. Your provider will set realistic expectations at your evaluation based on your specific situation.
