A damaged tooth doesn’t have to mean the end of your smile’s natural beauty or function. Dental crowns offer a proven solution that restores both the strength and appearance of compromised teeth, allowing you to eat, speak, and smile with complete confidence again.

At Red Rock Dental in Las Vegas, Dr. Alan McCaffrey and Dr. Thomas Booker combine over 20 years of experience with advanced digital technology to create custom crowns that look and feel like your natural teeth. Our conservative, patient-focused approach ensures you receive the most appropriate treatment for your specific situation, often completing your crown in a single visit using our state-of-the-art same-day crown technology.

Dental Crowns Las Vegas

A broken tooth can be both painful and pose a risk to the rest of your mouth. A damaged tooth can become infected and may put stress on surrounding teeth because of the inability to chew with it. Crowns are built around the remaining healthy tooth structure to improve the function of the area. The crown both strengthens the tooth and improves the appearance of your smile!

Chipped or cracked teeth as well as teeth that have large dental fillings are all candidates for dental crowns. Your dentist will take impressions of your teeth to ensure a perfect fit for a durable and effective treatment.

What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that completely covers a damaged or weakened tooth above the gum line. Think of it as a protective helmet for your tooth. The American Dental Association notes that crowns can strengthen teeth with large cavities when there isn’t enough healthy tooth structure to hold a filling, and they can also attach dental bridges or protect weakened teeth.

Modern crowns are crafted from various materials, each offering unique benefits. Porcelain crowns provide the most natural appearance, matching your surrounding teeth perfectly. Ceramic crowns offer durability with excellent aesthetics. For back teeth that endure heavy chewing forces, zirconia crowns provide exceptionalal strength while maintaining a natural look.

Our team uses digital impressions and 3D imaging technology to ensure your crown fits perfectly and blends seamlessly with your natural smile. This precision approach eliminates the discomfort of traditional putty impressions while delivering superior results.

When Do You Need a Dental Crown?

Several situations may require crown placement to preserve your oral health and comfort. Large cavities that have compromised significant tooth structure often need crowns rather than fillings. A filling in such cases would be too large and could actually weaken the remaining tooth structure further.

Cracked or fractured teeth frequently benefit from crown protection. Without a crown, these teeth remain vulnerable to further damage, bacterial infection, and eventual tooth loss. Root canal therapy almost always requires a crown afterward, as the procedure removes the tooth’s nerve and blood supply, making it more brittle.

Severely worn teeth from grinding, acid erosion, or natural wear patterns can be restored to their original height and function with crowns. Additionally, crowns can improve the appearance of misshapen or severely discolored teeth when other cosmetic treatments aren’t sufficient.

Signs You May Need a Crown

Your tooth may require crown protection if you experience persistent pain when chewing, sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers, visible cracks or chips, or a large filling that has failed repeatedly. Sometimes, you may notice rough or sharp edges on a damaged tooth, or food consistently gets trapped in the same area.

The Crown Placement Process

At Red Rock Dental, we’ve streamlined the crown process to maximize your comfort and convenience. Traditional crown procedures required multiple visits and temporary crowns, but our advanced technology often allows us to complete your treatment in a single appointment.

During your initial consultation, Dr. McCaffrey or Dr. Booker will thoroughly examine your tooth using digital X-rays and our CBCT 3D imaging system. This comprehensive evaluation ensures we understand the full extent of any damage and can plan your treatment precisely.

For same-day crowns, we use digital scanners to create a detailed 3D model of your tooth and the surrounding area. This eliminates messy impression materials while providing incredibly accurate measurements. Our in-office milling unit then crafts your custom crown from a high-quality ceramic block while you wait.

The tooth preparation process involves removing any decay and shaping the tooth to accommodate the crown. We prioritize minimally invasive techniques, preserving as much healthy tooth structure as possible. Local anesthesia ensures your complete comfort throughout the procedure.

Once your crown is ready, we carefully check the fit, bite, and appearance before permanently cementing it in place. You’ll leave our office with your fully restored tooth, ready to function normally.

Dental Crown Procedure

The dental crown procedure at our practice in Las Vegas typically involves the following steps:

  1. Consultation and Examination: During your initial visit, we will examine your tooth and take X-rays to determine if a dental crown is the best solution.
  2. Tooth Preparation: The damaged tooth is shaped to make room for the crown. This may involve removing a portion of the tooth or building it up if there is extensive decay.
  3. Impressions: We take impressions of your prepared tooth and the surrounding teeth to create a precise mold for your custom crown.
  4. Temporary Crown: A temporary crown is placed to protect your tooth while the permanent crown is being fabricated.
  5. Permanent Crown Placement: Once your custom crown is ready, we will remove the temporary crown and securely bond the permanent crown to your tooth.

Benefits of Modern Crown Technology

Today’s crown technology offers significant advantages over older methods. Same-day crowns eliminate the inconvenience of temporary crowns and multiple appointments. You avoid the sensitivity and dietary restrictions that come with wearing a temporary restoration for weeks.

Digital impressions provide superior accuracy compared to traditional methods. The precise fit reduces the risk of future complications and ensures optimal comfort. Our 3D imaging allows us to evaluate the underlying bone structure and surrounding teeth, leading to better treatment outcomes.

Modern crown materials offer exceptionalal durability and natural appearance. With proper care, your crown can last 15-20 years or longer. The conservative preparation techniques we use preserve maximum natural tooth structure, supporting long-term oral health.

Crown Care and Maintenance

Caring for your crown is simple and follows the same principles as caring for natural teeth. Regular brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste removes plaque and bacteria. Daily flossing remains essential, paying special attention to the area where the crown meets your natural tooth.

Avoid using your crowned tooth as a tool to open packages or crack hard objects. While crowns are strong, excessive force can damage them just as it would natural teeth. If you grind your teeth at night, a custom night guard can protect both your crown and natural teeth from excessive wear.

Regular dental checkups allow us to monitor your crown’s condition and address any issues before they become serious problems. Professional cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup that could compromise the crown’s longevity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is a Crown?

A crown is a restorative appliance that completely covers a tooth with artificial material. Crowns can be manufactured from different materials, like porcelain, ceramic, gold, a tooth-colored metal called zirconia, or any combination of these. The chief purpose of a crown is to restore the tooth to its normal shape and function. And consequently, it will replace any missing tooth structure, reinforce and fix any cracks, and stabilize weakened teeth.

What Is a Bridge?

A bridge is a restorative appliance that uses multiple crowns linked together to replace a missing tooth. A minimum of two crowns are attached on either side of a false tooth, referred to as a pontic. Dental bridges are categorized according to the number of teeth they replace. The most regular is a three-unit bridge, which makes use of two teeth as anchors for one replacement tooth. A bridge is a relatively quick method to replace a missing tooth, requiring only a few weeks for its fabrication. Bridges are permanently secured onto the anchor teeth; the patient cannot remove them. A bridge offers an alternative tooth replacement option to a dental implant.

How much is a dental crown?

The cost of a dental crown varies depending on the materials used and the complexity of the case. Contact us for a personalized estimate.

Are dental crowns noticeable?

Dental crowns are designed to look natural and blend seamlessly with your existing teeth, making them virtually unnoticeable.

What Is the Process for Placing a Crown and/or a Bridge?

Both crowns and bridges are placed through similar processes At Red Rock Dental. First, the teeth will be numbed and then the tooth (or teeth in case of a bridge) will be prepared. This is done by shaving the outer layer of enamel to make space for the covering material. Then a digital impression of the prepared teeth is taken and sent to the lab for its fabrication. While waiting for your appliance, you can wear a temporary crown or bridge made from a plastic material. Once the permanent restoration is ready, you will have to return to our dental office for its fitting. We will confirm the perfect fit of both crowns and bridges with a detailed evaluation, including an X-ray. Once satisfied, we will use permanent cement to attach it to your tooth or teeth. After we fix the final crown or bridge, you should be able to immediately return to your normal routines. If a bridge replaces a tooth that has been missing for a long time, you may have to go through an adjustment period for your lips, cheeks, and tongue.

What are dental crowns used for?

Dental crowns are used to protect weak teeth, restore broken teeth, cover dental implants, and enhance the appearance of discolored or misshapen teeth.
